Located in the picturesque historic marina area of Shelter Island in San Diego, the recently refreshed and expanded Kona Kai Resort & Spa offers a wonderful escape option for families and couples alike, or singles hoping for a reclusive getaway.
The resort recently underwent a facelift, revamped with a fresh, California contemporary island-inspired décor. Upon entering the hotel, one immediately feels as home in the lobby area, which features an inviting, beautiful designed setting.
The stunning property boasts 170 renovated oceanic-themed guestrooms and suites bathed in luxurious hues of turquoise, yellow and gold with distressed wood accents. The rooms overlook the harbor, pool area or private beach, and even the legendary Coronado Island can also been seen from the hotel’s panoramic view. Recently unveiled were eight “Coastal Revival Suites” and 33 “Endless Summer Suites,” conceptualized by interior design gurus Degen & Degen.
The waterfront Vessel Restaurant is not to be missed, with coastal culinary fare created by executive chef Roy Hendrickson, who offers his modern twist on traditional dishes and incorporates local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. Don’t miss the ‘happy hour’ with great signature selections such as the Reuben slider, crispy pork shanks or lobster quesadilla, which are also available as small plates on the dinner menu that also features a wide variety of dishes including charred octopus, Faro Island salmon and porcini-dusted sea bass. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Vessel also offers professional catering for bespoke events. The 360˚ bar is the centerpiece of the restaurant, providing a stylish meeting place to enjoy the beautiful marina setting.
The resort also features a state-of-the-art fitness center, a revitalized pool area with two heated outdoor pools, poolside cabanas and bar and a seasonal outdoor Tiki Bar, where one can enjoy the signature Kona Kai Mai Tai and an innovative selection of hand-crafted cocktails.
The resort is also home to SpaTerre, an expansive venue that offers a refuge and relaxation with its custom treatment rooms and elegant, full service day spa, that features a heated quartz sand bed, one of 16 available in the US, designed to purify and boost one’s metabolism.
Pets are also welcome at the resort, with the recently launched pet friendly ‘Island Paws’ program, pampering them with special beds, perks, and even in-room dining via the resident ‘Bark Butler.’
“As San Diego is such a pet-friendly destination, we receive a lot of interest from visitors looking to bring their pets,” comments Kelly Commerford, director of sales and marketing of Kona Kai Resort & Spa.
Locals can also join the Kona Kai Club, a private membership club first established in 1953, giving its members exclusive access to the property services and its amenities, including the Maderas Golf Club.
The next time you visit San Diego, the eighth largest city in the United States, a stay at this gem of a resort, set in this quaint, gorgeous setting of Shelter Island is highly recommended.
