In the world of watches, Patek Philippe is synonymous with tradition and modernity, innovation and expertise, luxury and elegance. In celebration of their 175th anniversary, the Swiss brand presented a collection of limited-edition commemorative timepieces, and one of them stands out for its horological degree of complexity. The Grandmaster Chime 5175R offers fantastic features including 20 complications and 1,366 motion components.
Grandmaster Chime 5175R
The superb Grandmaster Chime 5175R is the first double-face wristwatch created by Patek Philippe, with one dial in the front and another on the reverse inside a rotating, hand-engraved 18K gold case. The front dial displays multiple functions and includes the hands that mark the hours, minutes and seconds.

At the 6:00 o’clock position there is a small secondary dial with perpetual calendar and moon phases, with indicators of mechanical configurations on each side. Both sides show three letters for the alarm modes: on the left, the “G” is for Grand Sonnerie or high volume. The “P” stands for Petite Sonnerie or low volume and the “S” stands for silent. On the viewfinder to the right, the “R” commands the crown to activate the chime, the “A” is the alarm configuration, and the “H” is the hour setting.

Also on the front, but at 12 o’clock, a second 24-hour dial indicates the time the alarm will sound. At 3 and 9 o’clock there are two indicators of power reserve: for the automatic swing and winding alarms system, respectively. The front dial also displays three small apertures. The circular opening, located between 1 and 2 o’clock changes from red to white and indicates the sound activation. The small bell at the upper secondary dial shows the status of the alarm, and the third crescent-shaped opening marks the day and night.
The truly remarkable feature of this jewel from Patek Philippe is that 1,366 motion components drive all its complications. For example, the Grandmaster Chime has three main gongs for the alarms, offering different tones and configurable volumes.

The reverse dial shows a detailed calendar of four small secondary dials with month, date, day, and time. In the center, a numeric display indicates the year. All the side keys are also hand carved in solid gold.
This unique special limited edition required the creation of five entirely innovative complications. It took seven years of research and two years of production to achieve the eight copies that make up the exclusive edition. One of the timepieces was exhibited at the Museum Patek Philippe in Geneva, Switzerland while the remaining seven copies will be for sale at a price of about $2.6 million. ■
