In this case, AMG has achieved the desired results with the new Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe, a direct rival to the BMW M6. Leaving behind the placid rides of the S-Class, the high-performance subsidiary of Daimler has produced this spectacular car, with an impressive 585 hp and 900 Nm of torque provided by its AMG V8 Biturbo engine of 5.5 liters.
Destined to replace the Mercedes CL 63 AMG, the S 63 AMG Coupe gets its potency from the combination of increased power, over 40 hp, and a weight reduction of 143 lbs., achieved through the AMG Lightweight Performance system. With this new relationship of 3.4 kilograms per horsepower, the coupe is able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds (in the case of the 4 Matic AWD option) and 4.3 seconds (if you opt for the standard rear-wheel drive), thereby reducing up to six tenths the acceleration of its predecessor.
What’s more, the increase in benefits does not lead to higher prices, but rather the opposite: with the combination of both options and the 7-speed automatic gearbox, consumption falls to 10.3 liters (in 4Matic) and 10.1 liters at 60 mph, compared to 10.5 liters needed by the CL 63 AMG. Meanwhile, the CO2 emissions remain almost unchanged, around 240 grams per kilometer.
AMG has also optimized the comfort on board the vehicle. In addition to the already known Airmatic and Magic Body Control systems of adaptive suspension, which scan the road to anticipate the reaction of the shock absorbers, there is also the avant-garde Road Surface Scan. This system is applied to the active suspension and, as if it were a motorcycle, allows the driver to tilt- the car up 2.5 degrees in curves for more comfortable, efficient and safe driving.
Mercedes-Benz also wants to celebrate the launch of its new S 63 AMG Coupe with an exclusive Edition 1 version available during the first year of commercialization. This special edition comes with exclusive features including an improved range of equipment, such as the Plus night vision assistant, better materials and finishes, sport leather seats in gray and black or red and black and, at the height of exclusivity, Swarovski crystals embedded in the LED headlights.
The Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe will probably be available for sale in September, and its price starts at $275,000. ■
