It is said that the newborn Mercedes-Benz AMG GT aspires to achieve everything. It even dares to challenge some venerated sports cars such as the Porsche 911, which it can surpass in several details thanks to its V8 biturbo 4.0-liter engine specially developed for the occasion.
Two versions will be manufactured: the basic model delivers a maximum output of 462 hp that allows the coupe to go from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds and reach a top speed of 188 mph. In the sportier model with an S in its name, the same engine raises its power up to 510 hp, improving the acceleration to 3.8 seconds and increasing its top speed to 192 mph.
Both versions, which come already equipped with the Start & Stop system, are combined with the double-clutch seven-speed gearbox AMG Speedshift DCT, which carries all the engine power to the rear wheels. Along with the gearbox, a rotary knob allows the driver to choose among the four driving modes available: S (Sport), S + (Sport plus), I (Individual) and a more responsive C (Controlled Efficiency), to which a fifth called Race is added, designed exclusively to optimize the performance of the AMG GT S on the road.
Due to its racing intention, the car has an independent suspension on all four wheels of forged aluminum, plus the AMG Ride Control variable shock absorption, standard on the AMG GT S and optional on the basic AMG GT. As an additional option, the new Mercedes will be available with the AMG Dynamic Plus package, which modulates the suspension, the differential and the gearbox in order to further improve the performance and safety of the vehicle.
Its design, more modern than its predecessor, fits the new face of Mercedes-Benz and features a lightweight aluminum structure that keeps the proportions of a hard-nosed coupé. These include infinite hood, sloping ceiling line and a rear spoiler that plays a role of active aerodynamics, unfolding as the car increases its speed. Also, the AMG GT no longer exhibits the “gullwing” doors of his predecessor, opting for conventional doors to mark its character from the beginning.
If you want to purchase a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, you will have to wait at least until early 2015. Although the German automaker has yet to reveal the details, the buyers would have to pay about $190,000, which is the price of the basic model. ■
