We treat our pets with as much love, affection and attention as we do our family members because in many cases they are. Not only do they need us, but with the loyalty and affection they bestow in return; we want them in our lives just as much. Choosing a few animal charities that fit your interests is a great way to give back. I certainly like to spoil my pup, but I also like to help others in need! All my favorite charities benefit the lives of my furry friends.
If this is the case, and you are in a giving mood, you should always do your due diligence and review the organizations you will be joining or donating to. Arbiters such as Charity Navigator or other indexes will explain how much of your donation goes to the cause you choose and what percentage goes to administration and marketing. You’d be surprised to learn how much of your money is sidetracked to other functions. Here, we help you narrow the field with some of our favorite pet charity organizations.
ASPCA / American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Every animal deserves the kind of love and affection you show your loved ones. By working toward the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States, ASPCA’s mission is to help spread love to all animals in need. Their work to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters nationwide has helped thousands of animals.
PetSmart Charities
Smart Charities is dedicated to saving the lives of homeless dogs. Since 1994, they have saved the lives of more than 3.8 million pets through more than 1,235 PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers inside PetSmart stores. Each year approximately 8 million homeless animals enter shelters, and PetSmart works to save the lives of these homeless pets by creating and supporting adoption programs spay/neuter initiatives, and emergency relief programs.
Share-A-Pet
Every pet-owner knows the many therapeutic benefits they get from their animals’ unconditional love. The Share-A-Pet charity works to offer a wide variety of benefits to patients through pet-assisted therapy. Through this direct interaction, patients can experience the same kind of emotional benefits as you do from your loving pooch. Share-A-Pet’s free service is offered by trained and insured volunteers to hospitals, nursing homes, and children’s centers.
Cesar Millan Pack Project
Founded by “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan, the Millan Foundation’s primary goal is to provide financial aid and educational material to non-profit shelters across the country in order to assist in the rehabilitation and re-homing of shelter dogs. Not only does Cesar help you master training your dog, but he also does magnitudes to help rescue them.
Pets For The Elderly Foundation
This is a win-win charity because it gives homeless pets a home, and elderly people a friend. Pets can help us get over the loss of a loved one, depression, and remind us that we are loved and needed. By partnering with 58 shelters in 30 states to cover the costs of adopting a pet, The Pets for the Elderly Foundation helped match 6,500 animals with people over the age of 60 last year alone. ■
