The year selected for the launch of the new Ford GT is not a coincidence, just the opposite. 2016 was specially chosen to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first of four consecutive historic victories by the American brand at the 24 Hours of LeMans. This new installment of the iconic GT–presented at the Detroit Auto Show–retains its classic look, adding drama, modernity, and technology, as well as dynamic efficiency and lower consumption.
The 2016 Ford GT is very similar in appearance to the original and retains the massive air intakes. However, modern LED lights have been added along the larger fender, and the front windshield shows a rounded aircraft-inspired design that gives the driver more visibility.
Likewise, its dihedral gull-style doors have been radically redesigned, with sharp diagonal lines that end in a considerably wider rear body with a window that reveals its V6 engine. The tail exhibits enormous twin exhaust pipes, the model´s classical circular optical and a spectacular design in the aerodynamic diffusers.
The new Ford GT caters to cosmopolitan tastes. It is similar to the latest lines from classic supercar manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamborghini or McLaren.
When it comes to applied technology, the GT 2016 has a carbon fiber body and an aluminum substructure that allows a drastic reduction in the weight of the chassis while providing high strength and efficiency. The engine is centrally located behind the passenger seat, optimizing stability and weight distribution. The seats are integrated into the body, thereby reducing their weight and giving the driver greater appreciation of the car’s movements. Read about our selection of luxury super sports cars.
The ultra-modern line of the 2016 GT is one of the highlights of the designs. Significant improvements in the aerodynamic coefficients include new components for active stabilization, such as the rear flaps, which change their position as needed.
The interior draws from the minimalist designs found in Formula 1 cars. All the functions are concentrated on the steering wheel with shift paddles behind the seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle, which can be customized to suit the driver preferences. A second digital display on the central console features all the multimedia devices included in Ford´s Sync 3 system.
This superb car boasts one of the most powerful engines ever built: a twin-turbocharged 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 with more than 600 horsepower. The engine has been extensively tested in professional circuits, achieving victories in the 2014 Tudor United Sports Car Championship and the 12 Hours of Sebring. EcoBoost engines combine excellent performance with controlled consumption, in line with the global trend to produce supercars that are less aggressive to the environment.
Without a doubt, The Ford GT 2016 will be one of the most exciting market launches this year. Already thousands of fans are looking forward to enjoying the new GT on the road. ■
