Featuring 770 horsepower and impeccable design, the Lamborghini Centenario is a work of art
The firm of the wild bull decided to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini (1916-1993), building the most powerful model in its history: the Lamborghini Centenario, with 770 horsepower (HP). This work of art was one of the most prominent exhibits at the Lamborghini Centenario Press Conference, which took place at the Geneva Motor Show 2016, an emblematic event in the automotive world.
This was a limited edition of 40 cars —20 convertibles and 20 coupes—with a price of approximately US $1.8 million. The edition was sold out the same year it was launched, and most of the units were sold at the 2016’s Geneva Motor Show. The new model respects the distinctive design of the brand but with a super sporty look. The front presents straight and angular lines, with many nooks and vents and yellow accents that enhance the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
The sides of the car show ascending diagonals and massive doors that open in the characteristic guillotine-style movement of the brand. Behind the doors, there are two large air intakes designed to allow the flow of cold air to the huge rear wheels and powerful engine. The rear end of the Lamborghini Centenario has long taillights in the shape of a Y, and massive air diffusers in the lower area, as well as a hidden robotized spoiler at the top, which can be operated to change height and position according to current needs, significantly improving the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance.
The Lamborghini Centenario features both permanent all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering
Most components of the body are manufactured in carbon fiber, which gives the car a total weight of only 3,351 pounds (1,519 kilos), powered by the most powerful engine in the history of the brand, a naturally aspirated V-12 motor with 770 HP, generated at 8,600 rpm by 12 valves (V12) 6,500 cc. This enormous power allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (100 km / h) in 2.8 seconds with a top speed of around 220 mph (355 km / h).
An interesting mechanical feature in this new model is that, in addition to the permanent all-wheel drive system, the Lamborghini Centenario also has rear-wheel steering. At lower speeds the rear wheels rotate in the opposite director creating a virtual reduction of the wheelbase and improving turning agility, and at higher speeds the wheels turn in the same direction creating a virtual increase of the wheelbase making it the first Lamborghini in history to have this technology.
The interior of the Lamborghini Centenario is just as stunning as its exterior: not only is it luxurious but also technologically advanced. It features two main screens: one that goes behind the wheel to control the functionality of the instruments, and the other is a huge 10.1-inch touchscreen in the center console, with 4G connection and Apple Carplay system, where the user can set his car’s preferences, surf the Internet and receive emails, among many other features.
Undoubtedly, Ferruccio Lamborghini would be very proud of his brand’s exceptional vehicle, which was created to celebrate his centenary, strictly respecting the building traditions of the brand and including avant-garde technologies. ■
