Hybrid engine technologies in the automotive industry have gained wide acceptance in the recent year. This success is mainly due to their ecological impact, as well as their excellent performance and amazing speeds. The Regera sports supercar, manufactured by the Swedish company Koenigsegg is distinguished by its superb performance and efficient use of energy. Review our selection of sports supercars.
The Regera model is equipped with an impressive 1,500 horsepower hybrid powertrain, which combines a stunning 5-liter V8 engine and 1100 horsepower, with an electrical system composed of three independent engines generating a total output of 700 HP. This immense amount of power is managed by an elaborate device called streaming KDD (Koenigsegg Direct Drive), which replaces the traditional manual transmission gears (CVT) with an innovative system of continuous transmission that directs all its power to the rear wheels. According to the manufacturer, it eliminates the gear jumps that happen with regular transmissions, which results in energy savings of 50 percent.
The combination of this type of engine with the new drive system generates an impressive performance. The Koenigsegg Regera can accelerate from 0 to 400 kilometers per hour (about 250 mph) in just 20 seconds, reaching a top speed of around 410 kph (255 mph).
Also, the Regera features a dual electric charge system that allows the vehicle’s batteries to be powered by both the engine combustion system and the port or type 2 electrical charging plug. These advantages are only available in strictly electrical vehicles such as the Rimac or the Tesla. The dual capability works in conjunction with an intelligent charging system, whose software controls the routes and, depending upon the driving style manages the electrical energy stored in the batteries, optimizing their performance until the car reaches the next charging point. The new system also ensures lower emissions.
However, this cutting-edge technology has not been reserved exclusively for the engine. The Regera also has a joint robotic system whereby the vertical opening doors, as well as the hood and flaps, are activated automatically by electronic commands. In fact, the vehicle doors can be opened from an intelligent phone, thanks to a unique application.
Meanwhile, the interior of the Regera is highly luxurious. It features state of the art sound systems, an entertainment center with 3G, WIFI and a 9-inch screen with Apple CarPlay interface, functional LED lighting and power leather seats that can be adjusted to six positions. The Koenigsegg Regera, in a limited edition of 80 copies, was put on the market in 2016, with a price of US$1.9 million. ■
