The Sauvignon Blanc–originally from the Loire and Bordeaux regions in France–is a grape used to produce high-quality white wines. The robust fruit adapts well to different climates, and that is the main reason its cultivation has spread over many wine regions of the world.
Here, a review of three of the best wines produced from Sauvignon Blanc grapes. See more of our selections of international wines.
Terre de Marne 2013
WINERY: Vignobles Berthier // GRAPES: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
COUNTRY: France // REGION: Coteaux du Giennois
The grapes used to produce this wine are grown in the ancestral land of Marne, Loire. The soil there is rich with the remnants of prehistoric oysters, which create a unique terroir that produces intense and unforgettable vintages. Bright yellow with green hues, Terre de Marne 2013 has pleasant aromas of lychee and papaya, with notes of grapefruit. The taste is smooth and round and immediately brings memories of nature. Its finish is friendly, rounded and stylish. It is the perfect complement for the best Japanese dishes.
Impromptu 2013
WINERY: Bodegas Hispano Suizas // GRAPES: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
COUNTRY: Spain // REGION: Utiel-Requena
In the Spanish wine region of Utiel-Requena, Pablo Ossorio, one of the most notable winemakers in the country, has created real oenological masterpieces. In collaboration with partners Marc Grin and Rafael Navarro, the wines they produce are highly regarded by domestic and international critics. Impromptu 2013 is one of the best Spanish Sauvignon Blancs. Its color is yellow with green hues and closer to the nose one can detect its high intensity, the presence of minerals, and aromas of fresh tropical fruits and compote. In the mouth, the fruitiness is delightful, unctuous and dense, with excellent acidity and a long finish on the palate. It is a perfect wine to enjoy with freshly cooked seafood or Russian caviar.
Aconcagua Costa 2013
WINERY: Viña Errazuriz // GRAPES: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
COUNTRY: Chile // REGION: Aconcagua Valley
Viña Errazuriz, a family winery founded in 1870, is located only sixty miles north of Santiago de Chile, in the Aconcagua Valley. The climate here is strongly impacted by the humid breezes from the Pacific Ocean, making it a suitable place to cultivate the Sauvignon Blanc grapes used to make this wine. The Aconcagua Costa 2013 is pale yellow with green hues. It is intense and elegant with aromas that highlight citrus notes of grapefruit with light touches of green chili and tropical fruits such as passion fruit and guava. The palate has a soft texture, which combined with its refreshing acidity and mild mineral taste make it a very attractive and fresh wine. It has a lingering and delicate finish and is perfect with fish soups, salads, and spicy foods. ■
