Nichola Joss uses a technique similar to shiatsu, but on the face: she applies pressure with the tips of her fingers over the cheekbones, back and forth, to induce movement to the muscles of the face. While it is true that it can cause a little pain, there is no trace of bruising at the end of the treatment.
But her techniques go beyond facials to also treat arms, legs and thighs, stimulating the muscles for better, healthier performance. Perhaps this is why movie stars and celebrities like Hilary Swank, Gisele Bundchen, Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Tilda Swinton come to her on the days leading to premieres and especially during the Oscars.
Nichola was crucial in the development of one of the most outstanding treatments at the Sanctuary Spa, the Active Reverse Facial. It works the muscles of the face to smooth, tone and nourish the skin. The results are evident from the first treatment. She also created a line of products for the Spa that is available online. Her Therapist Secret Facial Oil has become an authentic magic potion.
The Sanctuary Spa has become a London landmark, with more than 60,000 clients who travel every year from all parts of the world exclusively to receive their treatments. In 1978 the spa was featured in the film The Stud with Joan Collins, and in 1988 it launched its own line of beauty product.
Created in 1977 by American choreographer Gary Cockerill as a gift to his wife, the original intention was to open a space near the Royal Opera House where she— who was a dancer—and her colleagues could relax after ballet training.
Nichola Joss began her career as a beautician at the Sanctuary at the age of 19 and her treatments for the London spa are already legendary as the best facials in the world. ■
