Beets are a food full of vitamins and minerals, and provide great benefits for both the liver, the mind and, even if you don’t believe it, they also help you have a good sexual performance. They constitute the second largest source of sugar after sugarcane, and can be eaten as vegetables. Beets are rich to eat both raw and cooked and can be prepare as a salad either by shaving raw pieces of beets or boiling them in water. You can also include them as a side dish of a meal (adding them to any dish as if they were potatoes, which will give flavor and color to your food) or you can juice raw beets to make a nutritious and delicious juice that can be made with either raw or cooked beets. Each of these options can easily be incorporated into you daily diet.
1. They are natural Viagra
Seriously. One of the first known medicinal uses of these root vegetables was by the ancient Romans, who consumed them as an aphrodisiac. That is not just urban legend, and science backs it up. Beets contain high amounts of boron, which is directly related to the production of human sex hormones.
2. They are high in many vitamins and minerals
Potassium, magnesium, fiber, phosphorus, iron; vitamins A, B & C, beta-carotene, beta-cyanine and folic acid are but a few of the many nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that can be found in beets and beet greens. Beets are particularly beneficial to pregnant women, as the vitamin B and iron support cell growth in the fetus, and replenish iron in the woman’s body.
3. They cleanse the body
Beets are a wonderful tonic for the liver, work to purify the blood, and can prevent various forms of cancer. Enough said, right? Tastes good and prevents cancer?
4. They help your mental health
Beets contain betaine, the same substance used in certain anti-depression treatments. It also contains tryptophan, which relaxes the mind and creates a sense of well-being, similar to eating chocolate. They can also lower your blood pressure. So if you’re already steamed about not eating beets, you can get a twofer by diving into them right away.
5. They are used as a stomach acid tester
Nutritionists use beets and beet juice to test stomach acid levels. If you are eating a lot of beets or beet juice, and your pee turns pink, guess what? You have low stomach acid. Pee still clear? Ratchet it up and get juicing (use the greens too)!
6. They are a high source of energy
At the same time, they are low in calories and high in sugar (although the sugar is released into your system gradually, as opposed to chocolate). With their high volume of nutrients, delicious taste, and a multitude of uses, anyone can jump right into beets without missing a beat.■
