Around this time of year the top fashion houses launch their Resort/Cruise collections. These pieces tend to be more relaxed and wearable than what is shown on the catwalks during Fashion Week. Fashion shows are increasingly moving away from the essence of the business, which is showing and celebrating clothes. These days the flashing of photographer’s cameras, celebrity sightings and eccentric presentations, can overshadow the designer’s creations.
Designer Fausto Puglisi presented, in his first cruise collection for Ungaro, a wide range of sophisticated pieces that can be combined with casual elements and seasonal accessories.
The designer finds modern elegance in “a woman who enjoys eating a hamburger, while wearing a ring from Harry Winston”. For this collection he has introduced perforated leather vests combined with floral print summer dresses; sober pied-de-coq two piece suits; short dresses with Letterman jackets; and elegant palazzo pants over delicate t-shirts. Wide legged pants are sure to become the essential piece this fall and next summer –comfortable, chic, and easily accessorized.
Puglisi’s creations are reviving interest in Maison Ungaro, after a few turbulent years and an endless parade of designers, which included a disastrous stint with actress Lindsay Lohan.
Emanuel Ungaro founded the label in 1965; he had previously worked as an apprentice in the ateliers of André Courrèges and Cristóbal Balenciaga. Today, with Fausto Puglisi at the helm, we can look forward to a strong come back from one of the most beloved French brands of the 20th century. ■
