Murano is a small island off the coast of Venice known as Crystal Isle for its ancient tradition and domination of glass art. The island’s crystal has made its way into the luxury world through uniquely distinctive and precious objects.
Recently, the Mosaic Collection, a masterly fusion of Murano glass craftsmanship and cutting edge designs by Dolce & Gabbana, has received rave reviews from the legions of distinguished followers of the Italian fashion label. The limited edition sunglasses are decorated with minute, colorful Murano crystals in floral patterns, delicate, edgy, elegant and luxurious, true objects of desire. More on accessories and fashion trends.
The Mosaic collection features works of art made with a great deal of dedication and patient craftsmanship: each pair requires more than 45 hours of painstaking labor, and very few skilled artisans are capable of working the filato minute mosaic or micro-mosaic technique to place each of the pieces in the exact frame. “In the same way that the seam is made stitch by stitch, so is the art of making mosaics; slow and precise, placing each piece one after the other,” explains the production team. With the Mosaic collection, the firm shows its Italian pride, as it has never done before, and from a totally new perspective.
Dolce & Gabbana made several models for its new collection, but the most sophisticated and spectacular is the 2136: over 1,000 miniscule red, blue, green and bright yellow crystal are set during its complex and delicate manufacturing process. With an edition of only 70 units and a price of around $8,300, these exclusive sunglasses have already become collector’s items. ■
