The story of the Claus Porto company follows a motto that summarizes their strong commitment to optimum quality: “Preserve the past, spur the present, and challenge the future.” The brand was founded in Portugal in 1887 when two German friends—Ferdinand Claus and Georges P. Schweder—settled in the Portuguese city of Oporto and created the National Factory of Soaps and Perfumes.
Their products soon earned the costumers’ praises and garnered international accolades. But, with the advent of World War I in 1914 and Germany’s participation in the conflict, the two founders were forced to leave town hastily, abandoning everything they had.
The factory was later purchased by its former director, Achilles de Brito, and his brother Alfonso, who took control of the operations. In 1918, Ach Brito & Cª Lda. made its debut.
With a clear vision of the future, the brothers promoted a strategy that positioned their products in international markets. They began to use lithographs and hand-painted tags to add a more personal touch to their products, which together with their high quality, resulted in a significant commercial success abroad.
In the 1990s, the fourth generation of the family— loyal to the values of more than a century of tradition— decided to launch a line of exclusive products under the name of Claus Porto.
Claus Porto offers different products in a broad variety of fragrances: Liquid soap, fancy soaps for guests, hand soap (.150 gr.), and bath or shower soap (.350gr.), as well as scented candles and eau de cologne.
Highly appreciated worldwide, Claus Porto soaps are favorites of distinguished personalities such as the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, and Oprah Winfrey, among others. ■
