With the advent of the industrial revolution and the emergence of a prosperous middle class in the United Kingdom, during the mid 19th century, there was a surge in the desire to own pets as companions and also as symbols of status and social prestige.
The country saw the emergence of a small industry based on items and accessories for dogs. Even Queen Victoria became a great dog lover and went on to have several of these adorable pets throughout her long life. The current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II is often seen with her beloved corgis.
Since, Victorian times, there has been a large market for products for dogs throughout the UK, with the continuous emergence of new companies trying to surpass and improve the existing themes.
In 2011, Mutts & Hounds opened their studio in Allington, Wiltshire offering all kinds of quintessentially English apparel and accessories for dogs, from collars and leads to beds, toys, bowls, biscuits and much more. The idea that canine fashion is a way to demonstrate your love to your pet is behind every object produced by the brand since dogs are much more than just companions. Hence, the feeling that we need to look after them, pamper them and give them only the best.
The firm’s founder, Laura Gogh, with previous experience in the world of fashion and design for dogs, is a fierce perfectionist. That is why Mutts & Hounds focuses much of its manufacturing in British workshops located in Wiltshire North and Somerset County. The raw materials used in the production are sourced from London, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, and Lancashire.
With its headquarters on the outskirts of the beautiful city of Bath, this firm is inspired by the English countryside and British traditions.
The workshops bring about products capable of withstanding the onslaught of nature’s elements, using quality fabrics, quilts and waterproof tarpaulins with fleece, sherpa, and materials made of spun Yorkshire wool.
The range of items offered by Mutts & Hounds England includes stylish beds for dogs, premium bedding, extravagant scarves, soft and practical harnesses in a variety of woolens, classic collars made of Italian leather, as well as home furnishings and gifts without forgetting our best friend’s favorite toys, which are available in a wide variety of fabrics and designs.
The designs that depict the Union Jack—the iconic flag of the United Kingdom—are favorites among the British and other nationalities. Also, items made of high-quality tweed—a material that reflects the typically British image—are sought after by the brand’s fans.
The products created by Mutts & Hounds are found in some exclusive boutiques in high-profile British stores, including Harrods, John Lewis, and Selfridges, as well as 200 stores in 18 countries. ■
