This new super sports car has the difficult task of replacing the successful Gallardo. It retains some of the features of its predecessor but outperforms it thanks to a 620 hp engine. It will be available for sale during the summer months.

The Lamborghini Huracan: Evolution of the Species

By Joe Hurley

It's August 3, 1879, a bull is brought to the arena on the Spanish town of Alicante and amazes those present for his extreme ferocity, leaving behind — according to the chronicles of the time—several horses dead. Today, 125 years later, honoring its bullfighting tradition, the Italian automaker Lamborghini recovers the name of that historic bull to christen their new supercar: the Lamborghini Huracan.

Fierce and ambitious, the Huracan LP 610-4 comes with a difficult task: to replace the successful Gallardo, the most popular car in the history of Lamborghini, with over 14,000 units produced in the Sant'Agata Bolognese factory. Since, in these cases, legacy always matters, the Huracan shows a similar design to demonstrate it did not lose the good genetics it inherited.

But as often happens with successive links in an evolutionary chain, the new Huracan improves its pedigree. It is 330 pounds lighter, with a total weight of 3,135 pounds and comes with an atmospheric 5.2 liter V10 engine that delivers 610 hp and 540 Nm of torque to surpass the performance of its predecessor with notable figures: it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 202 mph. The engine is attached to a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which distributes the power between all four wheels. It travels an average of 18.82 miles per gallon of gasoline and emits 290 g/km.

Back to its design, the Huracan is inspired by the aesthetic of the latest Lamborghini models (Veneno, Aventador and Reventon), which evoke the looks of a combat plane. It has a sharp silhouette to the rear, four circular exhaust, headlights with LED technology and ceramic brakes. These are some of the traits that define its exterior character. Meanwhile, the interior, judging by what little the Italian manufacturer has showed us so far, has a distinctive digital control box, which includes a digital 12.3 inch TFT screen.

The Lamborghini Huracan LP-610-4 will be officially presented at the Geneva Motor Show, to be held early next March. It is expected that shortly after the middle of the year, it will be available for sale. His biggest rival thereafter will be—as it could not be otherwise— a Ferrari, the beautiful 458 Italia coupe.
