Heesen's Galactica Supernova, Amels 242 and Bilgin 156 II: The Most Impressive Superyachts of 2016

By Federico Tibytt

The construction of superyachts involves a process that takes several years of development and a tremendous amount of effort. For this and other reasons, when these floating mansions take to the water, they are celebrated as great achievements by their manufacturers, the owners, the industry and all yacht lovers. Below, we discuss some of the most exciting releases of 2016.

Galactica Super Nova: The largest yacht in the history of the renown Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts, took to sea in the first quarter of this year. The vessel was formerly known as the Kometa Project.

This spectacular 229 feet long vessel has four levels and is driven by two incredibly powerful MTU 20V 4000 M93L diesel engines coupled with a complementary jet engine that allows it to achieve an impressive top speed of 30 knots.

Its main hull is made of aluminum, and the yacht has a capacity for 12 passengers. Its attractive exterior line was designed by the prestigious Espen Øino studio, while the prominent firm Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design was in charge of the interior décor. Its public debut was at the Monaco Yacht Show from September 28 to October 1st.

Amels 242: This spectacular luxury super yacht is 242 feet long (74 meters). It is one of the limited edition creations from the multi award-winning designer Tim Heywood for the Dutch shipyard Amels.

It has four levels with capacity for 12 passengers and 19 crew. On the upper level, it features a spacious panoramic suite complemented with a generous private deck measuring 240 square meters (2,583 square feet).

On the main stern deck, the ship boasts a huge pool measuring 21 feet. And on the main level, there are two VIP cabins for guests as well as three additional cabins with private bathrooms on the lower level.

The shipyard has described the Amels 242 model as Tim Heywood’s masterpiece. This precious superyacht was delivered to its owner in April 2016 and can already be admired in the most exclusive beaches and marinas around the world.

Bilgin 156 II: The Turkish shipyard Bilgin just released its second hull with a length of 156 feet (47.5 meters), which shows an exterior line very similar to that of its previous model, the 156 I.

With large windows on all levels and a spectacular design, which highlights the tops with diagonal lines, the exterior styling and naval architecture of this beautiful ship was created by the Unique Yacht Design studio while its elegant interior was in charge of H2 Yacht Design Studio.

Large enough for eight passengers, the interior of the Bilgin 156 II offers a master stateroom for the owner with private deck and folding balcony, plus three additional cabins for guests.

The main difference between this model and the previous is that it will incorporate a touch and go platform for helicopters (only to carry supplies or pick up passengers) on the stern of the third level. This spectacular creation by the Turkish shipyard will be completed and delivered to its owner in 2018. ■
