Mercedes-Benz Lends its Luxury
Concepts to the Interior Design
of Lufthansa's private jets

Federico Tibytt

Lufthansa Technik and Daimler come together in a unique project that enhances— with an avant-garde design— the interior of luxury private jets.

Two prestigious German firms, Lufthansa Technik AG, and luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz (owned by the German firm Daimler) presented a stunning new concept for the interior of a private jet at the 2015 European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition, EBACE.

One of the cornerstones of Mercedes-Benz’s 100-year history is its continued respect for quality and elegance. Apart from being one of the most important engine developers in the world, the traditional German company applies cutting edge design concepts in their vehicles that distinguish the brand as an example of engineering precision and sophistication. Taking full advantage of their expertise, Lufthansa Technik AG, manufacturer and independent supplier of maintenance, repair and service of aircraft engines, joined the team of specialized designers from Mercedes-Benz AG to develop a prototype for an exclusive interior design suited for the small and medium jets of Lufthansa airline. The joint effort combined the airline´s technological know-how with the aesthetic proposals presented by the automaker, mainly using the concepts of their S line of cars.

The project was carried out starting from the concept of dynamic architecture, where the traditional separation of three-dimensional plans (roof, walls and floor) are replaced by an integrative concept —called spiral— in which the paneling and the furnishings integrate the three planes to create cozier spaces. This technology provides separate areas that run smoothly and provide a feeling of organic fluidity, thanks to the use of contrasting textures, lighting and colors used by Mercedes-Benz in its most elegant models.

The 3-D projections presented in Geneva showed polished wood linings that cover certain sections of the cabin, combined with soft, padded coatings, as well as sporty anatomical seats upholstered with white leather. The same material is also used to cover the ample armchairs in the main room and the large double bed located towards the rear of the cabin.

Meanwhile, the interior windows of the aircraft, with integrated touch screens, have panels coated with a special dark glass that— thanks to Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky Control technology--darken or become transparent electronically.

"It was an inspiring challenge to transfer our design philosophy of 'sensuous purity' to Lufthansa´s aeronautical engineering," says Gorden Wagener, Vice President of Design at DaimlerAG. "The architecture of the interior of the aircraft is a clear demonstration of creativity and modernity."

This new concept will be studied with the help of Lufthansa´s VIP clients to assess its market viability during the coming years.
