Luxury Spas in the Snow

By Susana Ramudo

Winter is the most anticipated season for snowboarders, ski bums and champagne-zipping celebrities who love nothing more than lounging placidly by the hearth. If you throw in access to the most exclusive beauty treatments and massages, the experience becomes a feast for the senses. Nothing is more relaxing after a long day of skiing, than indulging in the spa. What these spas have in common is customized service in some of the world’s most haunting landscapes.

In the United States you can find great deals that combine winter sports with lush body treatments. Colorado is an obvious choice with truly special accommodations. In fashionable Aspen, at the Jerome Hotel, the Auberge Spa is nestled within the 120 year-old über push hotel. It opens the 2013 winter season with its first spa, a haven for relaxation and rejuvenation. The treatments are based on the ancient rituals practiced by the Ute Indians who lived in the Roaring Fork Valley. The recipes combine medicinal plants such as arnica with the minerals extracted from rocks and rivers of the area. The spa is being praised for its Extreme Body Hydratation Skin Replenishment therapy, excellent to hydrate and replenish the skin after it has been exposed the low temperatures. It features a body wrap of milk and honey from the valley, followed by a vitamin C facial and a relaxing foot and ankle massage with arnica-based products.

Montana and Vermont are also favorites with winter tourists. Those who enjoy being pampered while rubbing elbows with celebrities will choose the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana, the perfect place to unwind and recharge the body, while taking advantage of the 2,200 skiable acres (the property is much larger), where only members and their guests are admitted. It also offers private residences built to order, or duplex or triplex with spectacular views, many with ski access from the residence. Yellowstone Club is ideal if you want to disconnect and train in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The spa offers yoga and other treatments that will undoubtedly set the mood for a shopping spree in the exclusive boutiques or traditional Montana cuisine at one of the Club’s restaurants.

Canada has a reputation for having some of the best slopes in North America. At Bighorn Revelstoke in British Columbia, the most exquisite and delicate service is paired with a personal chef and private yoga instructor. The spa offers relaxing facial and body treatments, including their famous aromatherapy massages. The pool, overlooking the Columbia Valley, frames this magnificent villa that takes luxury to a new level, surrounded by great powder, snow covered peaks and nearby glaciers.

Those who prefer traveling to Europe may consider the wonderful ski resorts in France, Italy, Spain, Austria or Switzerland. In exclusive Gstaad, Switzerland, they’ll find the Six Senses Spa at the Alpina Gstaad Hotel, a member of the Six Senses brand of resorts and spas. The one in Gstaad combines the most exclusive treatments with personalized service within the most luxurious atmosphere at the heart of the Alps. The 21,500 square foot spa offers Ayurveda and other Asian therapies, along with soothing pools and relaxing waterbeds, treatments that relax the mind and help release the toxins caused by stress. The five star Six Senses just opened for business this season, but their full-body Moroccan clay mask is already a favorite of European aristocrats and celebrities like Valentino, who come to Gstaad for the season, but also to enjoy the select menu at Megu, the hotel’s restaurant.
